The Value of Mentors

I’ve had many mentors throughout my career and am grateful for their advice and support. Mentors are not a dime a dozen. They are a special breed of trusted advisors.

The good ones are successful, intelligent, and giving people who have your best interests at heart. They help you focus on the skills you need to accelerate your success, talk you off the occasional ledge, or share a life experience that can change your perspective.

They are great listeners and hear what you are saying. They digest what they have listened to before responding. They offer to advise and counsel, make introductions, and can help circumvent potential adverse outcomes. They are pros at building relationships.

And their guidance can be invaluable. When searching for a mentor, look for people outside your peer group. People you respect and admire. People you trust and value.

The mentor-mentee relationship can be significant. Often their input gives you a roadmap you may have missed otherwise. You won't always agree or like what they say, but the value they bring to you can be life-altering. Choose wisely and enjoy the ride!

I’ve also had the privilege to mentor others and am excited to be part of this year’s Washington Business Journal’s Mentoring Monday. Join me and other sharp businesswomen in the region on Monday, February 27th for this one-of-a-kind virtual event that brings together women in a casual, fast-paced coaching atmosphere.

Meet and network with our region’s most influential women leaders at the 10th Annual Mentoring Monday event.

The event will offer the opportunity to choose from over 40 mentors who are the most influential women in the business community for one-on-one and group coaching sessions. Register for the event  2023 Mentoring Monday - Washington Business Journal (bizjournals.com)
