Father’s Day is celebrated annually on the third Sunday of June. It is a day that honors fatherhood and praises all fathers and father-figures (including stepfathers, grandfathers, foster fathers, and great-grandfathers) as well as their benefaction to cultures, communities, and societies. Father’s Day mirrors Mother’s Day through the tradition of honoring mothers, fathers, and influential parent figures who mentored, coached, raised, and guide you throughout life.

In 1910, Spokane, Washington, Sonora Dodd thought about how grateful she was to have a man, a civil war veteran, William Jackson Smart, raise her and her five siblings alone after her mother died during childbirth.
President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane, in 1916, to speak in a Father’s Day observance. He wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, in fear that the day would become another commercialized holiday. The movement flourished for years but only became an important day, under former President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924.
Father’s Day was proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, in 1966, to occur on the third Sunday of June. However, President Richard Nixon signed Father’s Day into law in 1972.
Numerous people give and send cards to honor their father figure. Most of the time, people present traditionally masculine gifts such as clothing, electronic gadgets, and tools for household maintenance.
