Small Business Saturday

The holiday season is now upon us. The seasonal music has been playing over the airwaves and the decorations that everyone knows and loves were put up as the Halloween decorations were taken down. That means that millions of Americans will now be heading out to scour the nation’s stores and searching the web for deals to kick off the holiday shopping season in search of the perfect gift.

You’ve All Heard of Black Friday...

Everyone knows Black Friday, it has been an unofficial holiday for decades, that is since Macy’s in New York in 1924 offered the first holiday season deals in its stores as the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade went on. It has only grown in popularity since the 1970s and has become the day most synonymous with shopping in the world.

That is until now. Black Friday is not quite what it used to be as society changes and commerce moves from physical stores to online stores. There are very good reasons for this.  For the modern consumer, there is no need to leave one’s home to find deals saving on gas and time. There is no need to stand in line in the freezing cold at 3 AM and no need to take your life into your own hands as that too-good-to-be-true deal runs out before standing in an endless line to pay for your purchase. Want to compare prices? Just open up another browser window or tab and you can do it from your chair after getting a good night’s sleep.

It should be no surprise why eCommerce has become the preferred method of many shoppers and it has signaled the beginning of the end of Black Friday as we know it. Many stores have even refrained from opening early on Black Friday as traffic has declined by as much as 9% in 2018 from 2017.

Shopping online has skyrocketed for other reasons as well. Packages can be delivered in as little as a day, though that is still no excuse for waiting until the last minute. In many cases products are cheaper as well since many businesses are actively trying to entice customers to shop online and that shopping can be done 24/7. The website does not close, not even for a coffee break.

What About Small Business Saturday?

Of course, the world of eCommerce is not just the domain of the retail giants. Technology has made eCommerce easier than ever and many small businesses like Our Gift Biz have taken advantage of that. In fact, Small Business Saturday is in place to steer customers toward small local businesses to increase awareness of them and to promote what they have to offer.

Why is that?

Small businesses are what make America great. You can find a greater variety of products from a small business rather than a big box store that is beholden to a corporate boss thousands of miles away. Consumers get in many cases a more customized experience like the hand-written calligraphy notes that we can include with any gift basket that provides a personal touch that cannot be found elsewhere.

Support Small Business

At the start of 2019 30.2 million small businesses were open for business in the United States which account for 99.9% of all businesses according to the US Small Business Administration. 58.9 million people are employed by those businesses. Most of these small businesses employ less than 100 people. For these small businesses on average, 35% of their yearly revenue comes during the holiday season. It is a make-or-break time and it can be the difference in whether the business survives. Not all will.

Owning your own business is the American Dream. Anyone can own a small business regardless of race, sex, religion or any other demographic. Small business owners are what make America great and that entrepreneurship is the heart of America. They are taking the chance and stake their reputation on the work that they do, the relationships that they build with their customers and with the products and services that they offer. Small business owners have a lot to lose, which is why they strive to set themselves apart and find untapped markets.

More People Shopping Online Than Ever Before

The Internet has opened any business up to the world but that means that the world needs to find that business. With more people shopping online than ever before and with all of the conveniences that come with that it is no surprise that the commercial world has gravitated to the Internet. 1.92 billion people shop online, or nearly 25% of the world’s population and that number is only going to grow.
